Academician Ming Liu serves as Chief Scientific Advisor of the Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory

Academician Ming Liu, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IEEE Fellow, Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, and Dean of the Institute of Frontier Chip and System Technologies at Fudan University, serves as Chief Scientific Advisor of the Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory.

Academician Liu has long provided strong leadership and support for the development of young faculty members and emerging interdisciplinary research directions within the School. As a leading scholar in microelectronics science and technology, she has made systematic and influential contributions to emerging memories, micro- and nanoelectronic devices, advanced semiconductor materials and structures, and micro/nano fabrication technologies for integrated circuits.

Under Academician Liu’s guidance, the laboratory will conduct frontier interdisciplinary research in biomedical integrated circuits, brain-machine interface chips, intelligent sensing systems, and next-generation integrated circuit technologies. Her guidance will help the laboratory further refine its research directions, strengthen its academic development, and promote deeper integration between biomedical electronics and micro/nanoelectronics.

Institute of Frontier Chip and System Technologies at Fudan University

Academician Liu currently serves as Dean of the Institute of Frontier Chip and System Technologies at Fudan University. She is also a Research Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Key Laboratory of Microelectronic Devices and Integrated Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She has served as Chief Scientist of a National Major Basic Research Program, received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, led an Innovative Research Group supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and was selected for the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project and the Beijing Science and Technology Leading Talent Program.

Academic Leadership and Major Contributions

Academician Liu has long been engaged in research on microelectronics science and technology. Her work focuses on key scientific and technological challenges in memory device mechanisms, materials and structures, core enabling technologies, and integrated circuit fabrication. She has established internationally influential research achievements in emerging memories and micro/nano fabrication technologies for integrated circuits.

Her representative contributions include:

  • Establishing physical models for resistive random-access memory (RRAM), and proposing and realizing fundamental theories and key technologies for high-performance RRAM and its integration;
  • Expanding new material and structural systems for emerging flash memories, and proposing new reliability characterization techniques, failure models, and physical mechanisms;
  • Developing China’s first independently owned-IP 8M nanocrystal memory chip and 1G NOR flash memory chip;
  • Advancing integrated circuit fabrication technologies, with broad applications in mask manufacturing, special devices urgently needed for national major projects, and information technologies.

Academician Liu has published more than 300 SCI-indexed papers, with over 6,000 SCI citations by others. Six of her papers were selected as ESI Highly Cited Papers, and two of her research achievements were included in the 2013 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). She has authored two monographs and translated one book. She has also been granted 246 invention patents, including 18 U.S. patents, with major patents transferred or licensed to several leading integrated circuit companies.

Awards and Talent Development

Academician Liu has received numerous national and provincial-level awards, including the 2016 Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the 2013 Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the 2007 Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the 2005 Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the 2009 Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the 2018 Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the 2017 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Award.

Academician Liu has delivered more than 60 invited talks at international academic conferences and has supervised more than 40 doctoral students. Among her former students, two have received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three have received the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and three have received the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Other students have received honors including the first Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Society of Electronics Education and the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Vacuum Society.

Guiding the Laboratory’s Interdisciplinary Development

The Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory focuses on next-generation biomedical sensing chips and intelligent healthcare systems. Its main research directions include biomedical electronics and sensing integrated circuits, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, data converters, and emerging sensing interface circuits.

As Chief Scientific Advisor, Academician Liu will provide important guidance for the laboratory in strategic research planning, interdisciplinary development, high-level research platform construction, and young talent cultivation. Under her guidance, the laboratory will further strengthen the integration of micro/nanoelectronic devices, integrated circuit design, biomedical sensing, and intelligent systems, and explore new chip and system technologies for brain-machine interfaces, intelligent sensing, and precision healthcare.

Looking ahead, the laboratory will build upon the disciplinary platforms of the School of Integrated Circuits and Micro-Nano Electronics and the Institute of Frontier Chip and System Technologies at Fudan University. Under Academician Liu’s guidance, the laboratory will continue to advance a complete research pipeline from system architecture design and chip implementation to post-silicon validation and system-level integration, striving to develop a distinctive and influential research platform for biomedical integrated circuits and systems.
